Author Jennifer Ashley Character Interview and $40.00 Amazon Gift Card Contest

Posted by Site Hostess Thursday March 10, 2011

PLEASE NOTE: The contest portion of the Jennifer Ashley event is now closed. The winners will be chosen at a later date and contacted via email.

Primal Bonds (Shifters Unbound) by Jennifer AshleyInterview with Sean Morrissey, hero of Primal Bonds (by Jennifer Ashley)

I’d like to introduce Sean Morrissey, the Shifter hero of PRIMAL BONDS. He’s Irish, hot, a Feline Shifter, and the Guardian of his clan.

JA: So, Sean, tell us a little bit about yourself.

SM: Not much to tell that you haven’t said already. My brother Liam is leader of the clan and of Shiftertown, and I’m his second. That means I take the shite jobs Liam doesn’t want. Seriously, though, Liam’s a good man if a bit full of himself. Even more so since he got his mate bellyful with his cub. You’d think no one had gotten a woman pregnant before.

JA: You’re the clan Guardian. What does a Guardian do, exactly?

SM: I send the souls of the dead or dying into the afterlife. My sword renders their bodies dust and releases the souls. The sword has a bit of Fae magic in it. Shifters believe they can’t get to the Summerland without the Guardian.

JA: The sword has Fae magic?

SM: It was made centuries ago by a Shifter smith and a Fae lass who put her magic into it. She fell in love with the smith and did it to help him. A romantic tale, that is.

JA: Then the Fae aren’t all bad, are they?

SM: Fae are fooking gobshites ninety-nine percent of the time. Only every once in a while do you find one you don’t immediately want to kill.

JA: But Fae created Shifters, is that right?

SM: Aye, they did. Millennia ago, Fae took wildcats of all species and put them together with magic to breed Fae-cats—wildcats with the best traits of each species. They crossed these Fae-cats with humans, again using some magic, and Shifters were born. They did the same with wolves—Lupines, and bears—Ursines. Fae were doing genetic engineering long before humans even formed the concept. Except you don’t really want to look into how they did it.

JA: Why did they create Shifters? Just to prove they could?

SM: Fae made Shifters to hunt for them and fight for them, to be their fighting slaves, basically. Shifters got fed up after a while and rebelled. That was the Fae-Shifter war, and from what I hear it was long and bloody. Shifters got free in the end and the Fae drifted back to Faerie. Humans were starting to use iron by then, which weakened the Fae. So the Fae went, and we stayed in this world. Better pubs here anyway.

JA: The Fae are gone forever?

SM: Mostly gone. They cross over now and again to stir up trouble. Or have affairs and leave behind half Fae children–half Shifters or half human. Half Fae can be trouble. They have immunity to iron so they’re stronger than Fae in this world. They don’t have all the powers of the Fae, but they can have some magic. ‘Twas a bloody half Fae that helped invent the Collars twenty years ago that keep Shifters controlled.

JA: The wolf Shifter you mate-claimed is half Fae, isn’t she? Didn’t that worry you?

SM: It did, but it’s not Andrea’s fault that her father was a Fae bastard. Andrea was raised Shifter, and she needed a place to go. Besides, her aunt Glory (who’s now living with my father) wouldn’t rest until she got Andrea to our Shiftertown. Glory’s Lupine, and her pack leader wouldn’t let Andrea come if she weren’t mate-claimed. You don’t want to hear Glory on a tear, that you don’t. I made the mate-claim so we could have some peace and quiet again.

JA: That was generous of you. You’d never met Andrea.

SM: No, but I needed a mate, and females aren’t exactly queuing to mate with the Guardian. Every Shiftertown has a high percentage of males to females, so females get to be choosy. It’s tough to be with a Guardian. I’m there at every death. A Guardian’s life is all about death.

JA: Being the Guardian means you have to send your own family to the Summerland too. Your brother, Kenny, was killed, wasn’t he? That must have been rough on you.

SM: It was. And I don’t like to talk about Kenny.

JA: Sorry. But Andrea doesn’t seem to mind so far about you and your duties as Guardian.

SM (with a little smile): No. She doesn’t. And I knew what Andrea’s pack leader’s son did to her—hounded her until she’d do anything to escape him.

JA: Was that a joke? A wolf—hounding her?

SM: I don’t joke about bloody abusive Lupines.

JA: No, of course not. What can we expect in the story about you and your half Lupine half Fae mate Andrea?

SM: The truth. Why I made the mate-claim and what it did for both of us. She’s something, is Andrea. Submissive, she is not.

JA: Did you expect her to be?

SM: To be honest, I didn’t know what to expect. But she’s here now, and that’s what matters.

JA: Will we see others from your Shiftertown in your story?

SM: That you will. My full-of-himself brother Liam and his mate, Kim. Plus my nephew, Connor; my dad, Dylan, who’s finding it hard to adjust to not being leader anymore; Glory of course; my neighbor Ellison; and Ronan a pain-in-the-rear Kodiak bear who’s handy for fighting. But Goddess, does he like to eat. Ronan can seriously put it away.

JA: Well, he is a bear. Kodiaks are pretty big.

SM: Damn straight, as Ellison likes to say.

JA: Thank you so much, Sean, for giving us a glimpse of your life and your world.

SM: No problem. Is that all? I have things to do. With my mate.

JA: And your sword?

SM: Funny. Everyone likes the pun with the sword.

JA: Sorry. Your sword is just so large and obvious I can’t help it.

SM: Yeah, yeah, enjoy yourself. (Humans.)

JA: Thanks, Sean. Blessings to you and your mate.

SM: Right back at you, lass.

Readers, if you have any question for Sean (or me), fire away. He’ll be around to answer. Any question or comment qualifies you to win any book from my backlist under any name. Thanks for being here!

    • Hey Lisa: Thanks for coming. I’ll first answer as Jennifer–The book is already part of a series. PRIDE MATES is the first one. PRIDE MATES is currently out of print, but it will be available in print again in July, and the e-edition is releasing at the end of April! PRIDE MATES is about Liam.

As Sean: Nah, my dad wasn’t rough on us, either me or Liam. Dylan is a good guy. We lost our mum a whlie back, and that was tough–he never really got over it. You see in Liam’s story how our dad Dylan is coping with everything. Or Glory will tell you. She’s a talker, is Glory.

      Thanks for stopping by!

  4. Lordy, I am a sucker for an Irish accent….thank you for explaining how shifters came to be. Andrea sounds pretty special to be the mate of the Guardian. I can see how it would be a bit difficult to take on that role. Glad you found each other.
Do you and Andrea get any downtime? If so, what do you two like to do, except, you know, I guess, the obvious with the sword…. *grin*

    • Sure, we get some downtime. I’m showing Andrea how to mess with motorcycles, and she’s teaching me how to relax a bit more. She’s a Lupine–wolves, they like to play a lot, so she always has something fun up her sleeve, like taking me dancing. And then taking me home and . . . you know, other things. And no I’m not even going to mention my sword (Goddess, grant me strength…).

Favorite pickup line: Don’t have one. Not many females want to be going out with the Guardian. I don’t want a woman who’d fall for a cheesy pickup line anyway.

    • Humans make shifters wear the Collar and force them into Shiftertowns, so Shifters aren’t all that happy with humans as a whole right now. They’re not unfriendly one-on-one though–the heroine of PRIDE MATES is human, and the hero is Liam, Sean’s brother. In the next book, WILD CAT, the heroine (Cassidy) is a Shifter, the hero (Diego) human.

      2) There are a lot of terrific authors out there, but collaboration is tricky. Robin, Joy, and I got along very, very well, but we were lucky.

3)On average, I write probably 3-4 full-length books a year and a couple of novellas or shorter books (like the Shareem, which are about 50K or so).

    • Proudest moments as an author: When I saw my very first book (Perils of the Heart), in print in my hand. I cried. When I saw my first mystery (The Hanover Square Affair, by Ashley Gardner), I cried again. I love the main character of the mysteries so much and I was so happy to see him get life. The next proud moment was when I hit New York Times for the first time. Winning the RITA wasn’t bad either!

Right now I’m working on Tales of the Shareem: Justin (next Shareem book), and finishing up Wild Cat. Next, Hart’s book of the Mackenzie series. Plus I’m working on my mystery series some more.

My favorite book? I don’t know!! I love Madness of Lord Ian, Stormwalker, Pride Mates, Many Sins of Lord Cameron (out August 2011), and all of the Shareem. Plus the Captain Lacey mysteries (by Ashley Gardner). Too many to narrow down! They all speak to me in some way.

Yes, I always knew I wanted to write books. I loved to read from the minute I learned how, and I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my life.

Do I know the title from the beginning? Sometimes. The book The Care and Feeding of Pirates had a title before I knew what it was about. The title just popped into my head and I had to write the book! Other books, like Pride Mates, I had to brainstorm after I wrote the book. Same with Primal Bonds and Wild Cat (book 3). I’m going for two-word titles obviously. :-)

Interesting questions! I’ll answer as Jennifer: Fruit: I really have no idea! (Maybe Sean would be a banana??). Desert isle: Some great music (like Miles Davis or someone else fantastic), plus a book or two–Jane Austen. Her books are slow but wonderful reads, and I’d want something that’s not over too soon. Neither Coke or Pepsi. I don’t drink sugar.

    Hi Jennifer,
Your books sounds great I’m going to be looking for a copy of Pridemates and get this new one too.

Since you are writing about shifters I was wondering if you have any pets?
If so what kind and what are their names?
How do you come up with your character names? Do you research or do they speak to you?

    • Joyce: Oh, yes, I have cats. :-) Hence the Feline Shifters. We call them the Spawn of Satan and his brother, the Natural Disaster. Sweet kitties (when they’re asleep).

For names: I keep lists. Lists and lists. By country of origin, by time period. When I need a name, I look through the lists until one speaks to me. I have a list of Irish names–from which came Liam and Sean, Connor and Dylan. I don’t know where Glory came from. She just said her name was Glory. I didn’t argue.

  27. Koren C says:

so it seems that my questions are still lost….

    Jennifer…

Are you looking forward to the Festival of books this weekend?

Are there any authors coming that you are looking forward to seeing?

    Sean…

Now you calling is a serious one….prior to that were there practical jokes and tricks among you and your brothers?

    • Yes, I love the Tucson Festival. It attracts about 60,000-80,000 people, and it’s all about books!

I’m excited that Mary Jo Putney, my inspiration to write historical romance in the first place, will be there. Plus Elmore Leonard, who I consider one of the best writers in the business.

As Sean: My brothers and me, we were always joking. They’d steal my clothes after I’d shifted and make me hunt for them. Of course, I’d do the same to them. When shops started selling meat in a tin, I got some for Liam but I didn’t explain to him about tin openers. Took him a week to figure it out. Then once Liam and I got back at Kenny for doing his stealing the clothes trick by filling his mattress with kitty litter. I thought we’d die laughing. Kenny’s gone now, but he was a good one for a joke.

    Hi Jennifer!

Do you intentionally try to bring up controversial subjects in your books or do they just tend to flow in that direction? (examples: autism, alcoholism, racism, segregation and bigotry)

    Sean,

How do you feel about the new step that your father and Glory took in their relationship? Also, though Liam and Kim are expecting, Connor at the moment is next in line to be Guardian right?

Hey Jennifer! I have been clicking that damned button on Amazon to get Pride Mates made Kindle for months now so thanks for answering that question before I could ask. :D I’m a sucker for shifters so I look forward to getting that in April!

I’m super curious what kinds of special research you might have done for the world building of this series. Any cool factoids or books that were helpful?

I wish I had a question for Sean, ’cause I adore character interviews but since I haven’t read the book yet I don’t have any. I am curious as to whether you’re a writer who finds characters first and then plots a story for them or vice versa?

Now just for fun… I loves me an Irish hero, if you could pick an actor to voice Sean for an audiobook version of Primal Bonds who might have the perfect accent? ;D

Thanks so much for this great interview Jennifer!
