When a Mullo Loves a WomanPearl has always wanted to find a way to connect with her mother — a mother that was taken from her at an early age and left her growing up with a loving but distant father. Moving to Monterey Bay, California from Liverpool, England to go to school at CSUMB, she never expects to find such a deep connection to her mother. Pearl also finds that she has a much deeper connection than she imagines, one that comes at a steep price when it comes to the ones she loves.

Living with Celeste is always interesting. The lively, carefree bleached-blonde knew how to be the life of the party and flitted from lover to lover without a care in the world, which is an extremely different life than Pearl has lived while growing up in England with her dad and step-mother. When they are being stalked while walking down the street, Celeste thinks in the positive — he is really cute and maybe he wants a date. Pearl, on the other hand, is concerned about the threat that the tall, dark stranger poses to two women walking alone in a very deserted part of town. The bizarre fact that he knows her name, wants to talk and somehow shoves a piece of ginger in her pocket is no reason to get paranoid…

Escaping the strange, yet sexy, man, Pearl continues on to meet Evan, the man of her dreams, and hopefully make him forget his ex once and for all. But when waiting for the very late Evan, she stumbles into a very ancient and almost deserted bookstore things get even stranger, especially when the store disappears and the book she buys goes missing, as well. It could have been a dream, but something tells her there is more to this than just having a daydream about a strange store while waiting for someone who never shows.

Evan has all the answers when it comes to placating Pearl about why he stood her up, but with the appearance of Adam, the sexy stranger, in her life and apparently making a place for himself there, she has trouble deciding which path to follow: the man that she has wanted forever who is hiding something and has secrets concerning his ex, or the strange man who is trying to steer her towards a different path and has a very unique and very unbelievable tale of his own which tells her that her life is in danger.

The pull of Adam’s story and the connection he has to her own past, her mother, and to her family that she has never known, leads them to attempt a seance to see if her mother or another spirit can help them to find the truth. When they discover that Pearl is not alone and she has a half-sister, the girls have to find a way to decide which path to follow and which path to avoid as their interest in finding the truth, has lead them to becoming targets from a very determined and deadly threat. The gypsy blood flowing in both Pearl and Celeste help them battle a Mullo, the spirit of a gypsy who had not found a proper resting place, but it also leaves them vulnerable to the plans made to stop them from finding out the truth. Trust and love will be a big part of the battle, but when the dust settles will Pearl walk away from her destiny or stand tall and accept the love of the man who has loved her forever?

This was one very sexy, exciting, and captivating read. I loved that an entirely different type of paranormal was used in this tale, the “gypsy vampire” mullo, something that I was unfamiliar with, provided the basis for this gripping story and kept me entertained with its uniqueness. I also liked the possibility of reincarnation that is entwined into the plot, as well.

Pearl and Adam were great together, but I did question her very unnatural attachment to Evan, even after finding out that he is connected to her because of another’s intervention into her life. Celeste was a bit flaky and I would find it more difficult to see her as a leading heroine in future books without her making a major overhaul of her life. However, as a sub- character, Celeste was very quirky fun and fodder for some amusing situations and conversations which added to the enjoyment of this book. There was a great deal of suspense in this book, too, which added to the overall enjoyment of When a Mullo Loves a Woman, and which I am sure will be prevalent in the next Pearl Kizzy book. Take a chance on this new author and pick up this book. I was thoroughly entertained by this offering and am sure that you will be, too.
