*****

With the approach of Samhain and the coinciding full moon, Yuki, Cal, Emma and Simon have to find a way to help Yuki strengthen her shields if she is to fight off the influx of spirits that breach the veil. All seems to be going well, but when a threat to the pack is revealed after one of the pack members is found dead, they might have more than a threat from spirits to contend with— there might be something who knows what they are…

Yuki, with the help of her sexy shifter boyfriend, Cal, her BFF, Emma, and the ever exasperating Simon continue to work to find a way to block the deluge of angry spirits that will be awakened by the coming of Samhain in less than two weeks time. When Gavin Sanders, a member of Cal’s pack, is found dead in his wolf form and with some very interesting objects hiding under his corpse, things get a bit more complicated. They now had to deal with a murderer on the loose hunting down members of the pack while still struggling to find a way to keep Yuki safe from being attacked en masse from the spirits that would be breaching the veil. Their investigations lead them to an ancient Sidhe amulet that might help keep the spirits at bay, and thanks to Cal’s interesting way of introducing Yuki to his world the summer before, they know where it is and plan to steal it; the only problem is that it is under lock and key in a store owned by a witch.

Setting Yuki’s spirit problem aside, they dive into the murder of Gavin which coincides with a new burnt brownie smell haunting. Thankfully, they are one and the same, which might come in handy when Sam, a teen shifter from the pack, goes missing and they scramble to find him before it is too late. Working to uncover any lead they can, it is both a surprise and a bit overwhelming when Emma develops a talent of her own which leads them closer to finding the missing teen. When they finally do find Sam, it might be too late to save him, especially when there is something deadly lying in wait for them, and the ensuing fight leaves Cal injured and fighting for his own life as well. Yuki must now step up her training and put it to immediate use if they are going to pull Cal and his wolf back from the grasp of darkness that threatens to shred their souls apart and take them both away from Yuki and the rest of the people who depend on the young Alpha. Yuki needs to solidify their union and to do that, she must see a man about a tattoo. Spending so much time concentrating all her focus on uniting Cal back with his wolf and centering them both with her sacred scarab totem, Yuki and the rest of them must now split their focus between his recuperation and the spirit storm awaiting Yuki if they are not successful in their efforts to heist Nera’s amulet.

Once again, I was delighted with this series. It is fun, exciting and entertaining. The depth of the characters, the intriguing plot and the blend of reality made it extremely hard to put down or focus on the fact that I needed to split my own focus between speeding through and enjoying it as a fan of the series and taking the time to write cohesive notes for my review. Yuki and Cal are a great couple, and I am looking forward to more of their struggles to adapt to their connection and to what the uniting of their totems means to not only their relationship but also to the pack and their friends. The other “relationship” that is hinted at intrigues me as well. Even with the “age” difference between the smart-mouthed wolf Simon and the quick witted vegan Emma, I am interested in seeing what they might ultimately mean to each other. With the author’s vagueness at his true age, it is hard to say what their relationship might be, but in any case, it makes for more intrigue and laughs along the way. Please take a chance on this series if you have the time. Despite the Young Adult tag, as an older adult, I found Spirit Storm to be extremely enjoyable, and with the focus of the series widening to involve the other characters more, I found it even more enjoyable than the first book She Smells the Dead.
