Velvet Cataclysm by Beth Kery

For the past eight years, Christina Astor and her son, Aidan, have lived at Whitby Manor. And for the past eight years, she’s fought her attraction to the owner, Saint Sevliss. He’s kind, generous, and devastatingly handsome. He’s also not one to want for female companionship.

Christina resolves to seduce her landlord after a night of heavy flirtation. She goes to the gazebo, the scene of many an erotic dream, to find Saint. She finds him, all right, getting intimate with two other women. Heart-broken and angry, she flees both the visual and her feelings, but Saint doesn’t let her get far. There’s more to the seductive philanthropist than meets the eye, and he’ll do anything to protect Christina from his dark side — even make her hate him.

Velvet Cataclysm is the first book in a sexy new series by Beth Kery. The worldbuilding is solid, if not a bit strange. There are six (originally seven) Sevliss princes and their clones roaming the world. There are rules in place to keep the princes from killing their clones, but not the other way around. The men are vampiric in nature, both physically and psychically, and can shift shape into different animals. It’s a very old school paranormal feel with a touch of new age science-fiction.

The romance between Christina and Saint is strong and sweet, but there are a few places that didn’t quite jive. I love their history and how strongly they feel for each other. It’s Teslar, though, who bothers me. Saint’s clone is deliciously evil until a pivotal point in the plot. Then a slightly predictable action occurs and he’s completely changed. It made me sad. It’s so rare to find a good villain these days, and I adored him.

I would categorize Velvet Cataclysm as erotic romance more than paranormal romance because about eighty percent of it deals with sex of one form or another. There’s something for everyone – M/F, M/F/F while female watches, M/M, and M/F/M. It’s truly a smorgasbord of steamy sex scenes I thoroughly enjoyed.
