Alpha Awakening by Diana DeRicci

There are two types of Alphas: those who are born and those who are made. Rush considers himself in the later category. When his parents died, he made himself grow up to become the protector both he and his little sister needed. In doing so, at the young age of 24, he became the next pack Alpha. He feels like he is trying to achieve a balance between his Alpha wolf and his human,
more reserved self all the while still trying to protect Sheridan. So where does Kay, this scrumptious human, fit in? No where. Even though she’s Rush’s mate, he can’t add another person to his protection list.
No one told the universe Rush’s plans, though, and Kay lands herself in the hospital after being back-handed by an ex. All of Rush’s protective instincts rush forward, and his wolf has had enough, Kay is his mate and the human half better darn well learn to accept this! “Amazing how much had changed in a day.” Kay is now recuperating at Rush and Sheridan’s house, vulnerable yet a little spitfire of passion for the good cop who saved her. Unfortunately when dealing with a pack full of shifter wolves, sometimes humans can’t cope; will that happen with Kay?
I loved Rush’s character; unlike a lot of “Alpha” characters, he cajoled instead of demanded, flirted instead of pushed. It was sweet and nice and all around perfect. Kay is a couple years older and a little more nervous about love at first sight…and the whole “mate” thing. There was enough plot and problems that the bedroom scenes were like a sweet treat rather than seeming forced. The story was just excellent! I only wish that the fight scene between the five naturals was detailed rather than a memory, but as a sexy novel of wanting goes, this takes the cake!
