Hi Adrian! Thanks so much for joining us here at BBB!
Did it feel a bit odd to leave Dante and Heather behind for a bit while working on the new book, or did you work a bit on both series at the same time?
Do you have plans to attend any fan conventions this year?
Hi Carol! Thanks for the warm welcome! I always enjoy visiting everyone on Bitten by Books.
It wasn’t too odd since I kept wondering what would happen if Kallie wandered into Club Hell during her New Orleans visit. LOL. (Which is something that might happen in a future story.)
I will be at Comic Con in July and Orycon in November. I plan to attend RT next year. I’ll see what other conventions I can work in. Please feel free to recommend a con!
Adrian, we would love to see you at Dragon*Con sometime.
I like the idea of Kallie in Club Hell.
I LOVE Black Dust Mambo!
I would love to attend Dragon*Con. I’ll have to look into it. I don’t think I can this year, but next year could work out great.
I’m so glad you enjoyed Black Dust Mambo! Yay!
Hello Adrian, I picked up Black Dust Mambo on Sunday and I’m 200+ pages in. What is your favorite color and favorite thing to order from a take out menu?
Back to reading.
Ruth T.
RSVp to Peeler’s and Anna’s events.
Hi Ruth, I hope you’re enjoying the read!
My favorite color varies, to be honest. Right now I’m very fond of red. I love Taco Bell crunchy tacos. Yes, they will be the death of me. LOL.
Thanks for joining us, Ruth!
Wow Hi Adrian!
Will you add to the Dante and Heather books are they just a rest for now?
Hi Kim, thanks so much for being here!
No rest for D&H. *grins* More Dante and Heather books are on the way! Etched in Bone, Book Four, will be out early in 2011, with more books to follow.
hi adrian…can’t wait to get Black Dust Mambo and start reading….and of course am anxiously awaiting more on dante, heather, lucien, von in your maker series….
Hi Roxanne, thanks so much! I hope you enjoy Black Dust Mambo. Here’s a little teaser for Etched in Bone, Book Four of The Maker’s Song:
Ain’t. Running. And I sure as hell ain’t hiding.
But that vow brings consequences that Dante Baptiste–True Blood vampire, Fallen Maker, rock musician–never imagined even as it brings him face to face with those hunting him and his lover, former FBI agent, Heather Wallace; the covert Shadow Branch, the vampire Cercle de Druide, and rogue assassins. And now that the Fallen have finally discovered their long-awaited Maker, they have no intention of letting him walk away.
As Dante Fights to claim his life as his own, while dealing with the awakened and shattered memories of his brutal past, an unexpected enemy arises from within Heather’s family; an enemy who nearly destroys Dante by stealing the one person who keeps him balanced–Heather. All worlds–mortal, nightkind, and Fallen–hang in the balance as Dante searches for Heather. And his success or failure will determine whether he becomes the Never-Ending Road or the Great Destroyer.
Oh how could you?? LOL waiting its just going to make this book reading an even bigger pleasure..
I just bought Black Dust Mambo! Now if Amazon would hurry up lol I am looking forward to reading it.. your books are always so well written and so much fun to read!
Thanks so much, Kim! I really appreciate your support and your comments! I hope you enjoy Kallie and her world.
Thanks Adrian!! I can’t wait!!

Hi Sandy, thanks for joining us! I hope you’ll give Black Dust Mambo a try.
Yes, I did do a lot of research for the series. I read a ton of books on hoodoo and voodoo, learned the differences between them, and about hoodoo’s cultural significance to the South, and even bought herbs and powders and oils from Lucky Mojo (hoodoo and occult supplier and teacher) and learned a few things hands-on for Kallie.
hi adrian! i read the first chapter and i’m hooked! me want more…:)
i have a couple of questions: what’s the story behind your skelanimal, the thing that squeaks? how many nin shows have you been to? how many books do you have planned for this series? and did you have any input for the cover? it’s awesome!

Hi Kisah,
Hey, thanks for being here and I’m glad you’re hooked! LOL. I hope you enjoy the rest of the story!
I stumbled across the Thing What Squeaks in a comic book store in Seattle and fell in love. It’s my little squeaky office mascot. (Along with my kitty, Diabla.)
I’ve been to 10 NIN shows and hope to catch Trent’s new band, How to Destroy Angels, if they play any live gigs.
I have five books planned for the series so far and will have no problem coming up with more adventures for Kallie and her friends.
The cover *is* awesome (art by Steve Stone). I was asked for background ideas, and what I suggested – the swamp, shack, blue bottles hanging from the tree for luck–are all on the cover!
Thanks TONS for your support!
Hey Adrian!
Happy Release Day!! I cant believe Black Dust Mambo is finally here
I got my copy in the mail this morning, and I cant wait to start it.
Was BDM easier or harder to write than the Maker’s Song series? Or were they two totally different experiences?
See you around the club
Rachel
Hey Rachel! Thank you so much for being here!! I hope you enjoy the story!
BDM was easier to write simply because I didn’t have to remember the back story from previous books. LOL! Plus there were fewer plotlines than in The Maker’s Song. But I enjoy writing both.
See you in Hell!
Morning all! Just picked up BDM and can’t wait to dive into it! Adrian, is Kallie based on any part of your personality? Love you tons!
Hi Conn! Thanks so much for being here! I hope you enjoy the book!
No, I don’t think Kallie’s based on any part of my personality – she’s bolder and braver and sexier (by far . . .LOL). Of course, people never recognize themselves, so someone who knew me might feel differently.
Love you back! See you in San Diego!
Konnichiwa Adrian!
I was wondering…while Im reading I like to snack on crackers or popcorn. Do you have a fav snack food while you write?
Hi Serena! So wonderful of you to join me here!
Red vine licorice and Otter Pops and Saltines are my favs. Yes. Weird. LOL!
Ok, I have to ask:
Sam or Dean???
The new book sounds great – I will track down a copy.

Hi Kimberly! Thanks so much for you support! I hope you enjoy BDM!
I love both Winchester brothers, but I’m a Sam girl, definitely.
Hi Adrian. I just finished reading Maker’s Song 1-3 and LOVED THEM. I will go and order Black Dust Mambo if it is half as good as the other 3 I am sure it will be fantastic!
My question is how many books do you forsee the Maker’s Song being in total?
Thanks for taking time out to do this today!

Hi Maria.
Thanks so much for being here and for your comments. I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed The Maker’s Song books! I think you’ll enjoy Black Dust Mambo too.
I don’t have a set number of books planned. I’d love to continue with the series, telling Dante and Heather’s story and of their world for as long as there’s a story to tell.
Amazon shipped my BDM book on Saturday!!! Should get it today and I CANNOT wait!!!
Adrian, thanks so much for sharing your worlds with us!!!
Growing up in South Louisiana, my favorite place was always Decatur St in NOLA….what is your favorite place in Louisiana?
Hey Addie! Always great to meet a Louisiana native! I’m so glad you’ve enjoyed the books.
There are so many parts of Louisiana that I haven’t explored yet, but plan to. So far, my fav place is the French Quarter. I really felt like I’d come home the first time I was there. I’m less fond of Bourbon Street, very sleazy, but amusing.
I love, love, love, sitting at Cafe du Monde, drinking cafe au lait and eating beignets while people watching and taking notes. And feeding the pigeons. LOL.
Thanks so much for your support!
I have your book on my want to read list. It sounds really good. What kind of dog are you going to get? Rescue dogs are really great dogs. I have saved alot of dogs, my latest is a choc. lab. She is just marvelous. My grandchildren love her. I only have 5 dogs, 2 cats and 2 soon to be 3 grandchildern.
I voted, chatted, enterd Kenyon’s contest, RSVPed for this event, Anna’s event, Peeler’s Kindles event, commented on this week’s coloum, checked out the 45 books, and did the Robertsons event and I think that is all. Thankyou, Lisa D.
Thanks so much for adding Black Dust Mambo to your want to read list, Lisa. I appreciate it!
I’m hoping to get a rat terrier, something small that won’t overwhelm my cats, but it doesn’t have to be a rat terrier. I’m all for rescue dogs (two of my cats are feral rescues), so I’ll check the shelters.
You have my deepest respect and admiration for saving dogs! And it sounds like you have an incredible family – two and four legged.
Thanks for being here Adrian. Do you come up with the title first or the story?
I rsvp’d.
Hi Viki! Thanks for joining me.
I come up with the story first, the title later.

Hi Diana,
Thanks for being here! Yes, I did travel to the bayou and was totally intrigued by it. Seeing gators, herons, owls, countless snakes and insects, it was great!
Hi Adrian!!! So glad you could stop by. New Orleans is know more for its voodoo, so why did you pick hoodoo over voodoo?
Hey Heatwave, great to see you here!
I chose hoodoo because Kallie doesn’t live in New Orleans, she lives back in the bayou and was taught hoodoo by her aunt. New Orleans voodoo is fascinating too. It’s different from Haitian vodun in several ways and has it’s own unique brand of magic and spiritualism. (of course.)
We have 3 crazy pups of our own. I will warn you that American Eskimos are completely crazy.
The other 2 are mixes, and females. Female pups seem to be easier to get along with.
How’s your skelanimal collection?
Hoodoo? What? Hello! Hahah I never heard of hoodoo. Will you mind explaining it to me? An author and expert’s explanations are easier. Did I read a Juju somewhere in there?
Thank you!

Hey, thanks for joining us!
Hoodoo’s been around a long time, actually. The main difference between voodoo and hoodoo is that Voodoo is a religion, with priestesses (mambos), priests (houngans) and devoted practitioners who participate in ceremonies to summon the loa (natural spirits and those of the dead), while Hoodoo is a system of folk magic following the same belief system as Voodoo, including the same gods/loas/saints.
With hoodoo, there are no priests or priestesses or ceremonies, just root doctors and root workers (also known as conjurers) working out of their homes and/or botanicas. Root doctors/root workers are consulted by members of their neighborhoods and communities for spells/cures/potions when ill (or feeling a tad cursed or full of bad luck) as often as a person would visit the local pharmacy. Laying tricks and foot magic, breaking/making hexes, creating natural medicines and cures for illnesses of all kinds–heart, body, and soul.
Poppets (voodoo dolls) are made for positive purposes as well as negative. To keep love and passion alive, to disperse negative energy and draw in positive. Candle magic. Divination with cards and shells and bones.
Yup. Juju. Magic. Gris gris.
Ooohh. Do you know where/when it originated? Have you met any voodoo/hoodoo believers?
Thank you!
Maybe I’m having a slow day or it’s just not getting through or maybe it’s a regional thing… but I have to ask what are Otter Pops?
I’m curious where were you a security guard?
And good luck with the dog addition to the cat family. I too have a dog in a house with quite a few cats and it’s never a dull moment!
Thanks for being here. Looking forward to reading the book!

Hi Rae,
Thanks for dropping in! I hope you enjoy the book!
Otter Pops are frozen flavored ice thingies. Like popsicles.
I worked just as a temp security guard at a logger’s convention – handling the parking lot. The most boring thing I’ve ever done. LOL!
That always makes me feel better to hear from someone with a successful dog and cat household.

Hi Sue, thanks for joining us!
I discovered hoodoo just in general research about Louisiana and New Orleans and I did a ton of research on it afterward. I read a lot of books about hoodoo (all written by practitioners) and even did some hands-on learning by picking up various oils, powders, and herbs from LuckyMojo.com so I could see how Kallie would do things.
This new series sounds fantastic. I understand that New Orleans was the setting for Black Dust Mambo (at least partially), and that Callie is from Bayou Cypres Noir. Where will further books be set in the series – in her home town or will she be traveling around?
I RSVP’d, RSVP’d & visited Linda Robinson’s event, RSVP’d Vivi Anna’s event, RSVP’d Nicole Peeler’s event, voted in this week’s poll and read & commented on this week’s column.
Hi Barbara,
Thanks for joining us and thanks for the comments!
Future books will be set in Bayou Cypres Noir for the most part, but she will be traveling from time to time (running either from or into danger) and will visit New Orleans again.
What made you decide to be a writer? I love reading all kinds of books. I enjoy reading very much and was consider trying to write books. How would I get started? Please enter me in contest. Tore923@aol.com
Hi Victoria,
Thanks so much for being here!
I don’t remember actually making a decision to become a writer, it was something I’ve always wanted. I was writing short stories in school, and it was just a natural progression.
If you want to write, go for it! The first thing you need to do is write the story that you long to read. Finish it. So many people start a novel, but never finish writing it. Write your story. Finish it. Always follow your heart and have fun!
Once you’ve finished your story, find some reliable first readers to go over it, people who read tons of books (especially in your genre) and whose opinions you trust. Look for writers groups in your area. Check bookstores and libraries. Visit writersdigest.com for tons of valuable info about the writing and publishing process.
But first – write and finish your book. One step at a time!
I wish you the best of luck!!

Hi Beverly! Hey, great to see you here and thanks so very much for your support!
Hoodoo and voodoo are both very misunderstood, actually. Hollywood has had a big hand in that, but so have some religions (I don’t want to name any in particular in order to avoid any arguments. We want this to be fun!). But the more people learn about hoodoo, the more the “evil” myth will fall away.
I’m going to have to ponder on the hero question and come back to that. I have several in mind.

My first novel, A Rush of Wings, sold about a year after I started sending it out. I landed my agent first, then the sale.
But the key thing is discipline and persistence. You can do it!
I wish you the best of luck!
Hi Adrian! Thanks so much for being here. My question is: Do anyone of your previous books hold a special place in heart above the others? If so, which one and why?
Nicole S.
Hi Nicole:
I love all of my characters, but Dante from the Maker’s Song books holds a special place in my heart. Because of all the hell he’s been through and because of his compassionate heart despite all of that.
Thanks for joining us!
Hi fellow Oregonian with cats who writes (I haven’t tried publishing, as of yet). I like your prizes and would love to have a mojo bag. I’ve made an anti-nightmare spell bag, but not a mojo one yet. I have southern roots, am interested in hoodoo/voodoo, and practice some (good) witchcraft, know what Otter Pops and Red Vines are because I’m born and raised in Oregon and have seen one representation of hoodoo in The Skeleton Key movie. Have you seen it? If so, did it seem somewhat accurate?
What’s your favorite thing about living in Oregon? Or living in Oregon as a writer? What was the most informative or interesting hoodoo book in your research? (I’ll have to check out the website for reference.)

Hi REB,
Thanks so much for your comments and for all the cool info you shared! And it’s always great to hear from a fellow Oregonian. I was born and raised in Idaho, but I’ve lived in Oregon since 1987. I like all the green in Oregon, the coast being so close, and the people.
Oregon has felt very conducive to writing, a fertile atmosphere. A good creative energy.
I read a bunch of great books on hoodoo (and visit http://www.luckymojo.com), but I think one of my favs is “Hoodoo Mysteries –Folk Magic, Mysticism & Rituals” by Ray Malbrough.
I saw Skeleton Key, but I need to watch it again. When I saw it, I didn’t know a lot about hoodoo. It’d be interesting to see it now.
Best of luck with your writing!
Hi Adrian, I love your books. This new series sounds like it will be great. Your birthday is a good day because I gave birth to my first child on Oct 4th of 1976.

Hey Lisa,
Great to see you here! Thanks for taking part! I really appreciate your support. It means a lot to me. I hope you enjoy Black Dust Mambo!
Hi Adrian,
2 words, Can’t Wait…..for my copy of Black Dust Mambo to be in my hot, not so little hand and for Etched in Bone….
Do you keep track of random plot bunnies as they pop up or do you let them run free until you need them?
Do you have a scene(in any of your books) that you wrote and absolutely loved, that you ultimately had to remove, that still comes back to haunt you?
Hi Koren,
Hey, thanks so much! I hope you enjoy Black Dust Mambo.
I keep track of random plot bunnies. Some I keep, some I pluck out to use later – otherwise the book would be way too long. LOL.
So far I haven’t had to cut a scene that I really loved. Fingers crossed it stays that way.
Ooh a new author to me. Thanks
My question is ” What magical ability would you want to have?

Hi Cheryl, thanks for joining us! The ability to heal would be great. All wounds, hurts, and illnesses.

Thanks for the drink! Love ya back!
Hi Adrian,
Ironically, I just finished A rush of wings today. I didn’t even know you were going to be here but was excited to see you when I popped onto Facebook.
I read what you said about NIN and was wondering if you have ever heard or listened to: The Mars Volta?
I think if you haven’t and you have a spare moment you should hop on YouTube and check them out. Very interesting story behind their “Bedlam in Goliath” cd.
I look forward to continuing Dante and Heather’s story as soon as I can get to Barnes and Noble. lol.
Oh, I don’t know if I need to say but I did RSVP.
Hi Teresa,
I’m glad you enjoyed A Rush of Wings. Thanks so much for dropping in!
I *have* listened to Mars Volta. I first learned about them when they split off from their previous band. Awesome!
I think you’ll really enjoy In the Blood, Teresa.
Hi Adrian,
Love the Q&A! I can’t wait to read Black Dust Mambo. I noticed you like NIN,(I love NIN) what other music do you like to listen to for writing? Does it depend on the book? I hope you don’t mind another question; I was wondering if you are a hard core plotter or a fly by the seat of your pants kind of writer. Most of the writers I’ve asked this of, are plotters. Thanks for taking the time to visit with all of us and for the contest. Have a Great 4th of July Holiday.

Hi Gail,
Thanks for joining me! I listen to Anders Manga, Chevelle, Rammstein, ModWheelMood, Linkin Park, C.C. Adcock, How to Destroy Angels, Muse, Queens of the Stone Age, movie soundtracks. The list goes on.
I do a little general plotting, then fly by the seat of my pants, so a bit of both. I don’t like to plot everything, because some things just fall into place.
You have a great 4th too!!
I have read authors stating that they write what their characters tell them to. So do you ‘hear’ the characters or do you just write what you think should come next?
I have two non book questions.
(1) Dean, Sam or Castiel?
(2) Security guard, as in standing at a bank, in a department store or armored truck?
Hi Elaine,
Thanks for joining me! Yes, I “hear” the characters too and write what they tell me – when it comes to their dialogue. When it comes to their actions, I slip inside of them and look through their eyes and take it from there. Sometimes their actions change the course of the story.
Sam.
Parking lot. Most. Boring. Job. Ever.
Congrats on the new release. Love the Q&A.
Saw the comments about music. I was wondering if you had a specific play list for each book that you listen too while writing?

Hi Beth,
Thanks so much! I’m glad you enjoyed the Q&A.
I don’t have a specific play list, I go with the emotions of the scene. That dictates the music I listen to.
But with Black Dust Mambo, I listened to more swamp blues than industrial.
Adrian – you know those people at signings who ask “who do you see in the movie?” They represent the 25% of fiction readers who ‘fantasy cast’ their favorite fiction. About the same percentage of authors do it, too – are you in the 25%, or the 75%? We made the web’s premier fantasy casting site just to entertain those folks (always free and non-spamming), and we’ve put all four of your books on there – http://bit.ly/Cast_AdrianPhoenix – so go take a look, post your cast, and then send the fans.
Thanks, Jeff!
I couldn’t post this til now — sorry!
Congrats on the release!
The book looks awesome — I’m adding it to my list! I have a connection to the name you gave one of your characters, too. I found it very cool! (A last name you picked has my name)

Hi Libby,
Thanks for adding BDM to your list! I appreciate it. And now I’m very curious about the name connection. Which name is it?
I have a bunch of favorite Supernatural episodes, but the final one of this season ranks high among them. So poignant and heartbreaking and powerful. I choke up every time I watch it.
I also loved the episode where Sam and Dean wound up at a Supernatural convention. Hysterical!
Wow, if I could live in a book for a day . . . I think I’d live in Jeri Smith-Ready’s Wicked Game and hang out with the DJ vampires at the WVMP station.
Thanks for the questions!
I preordered Black Dust Mambo and look forward to reading it this weekend.
Don’t enter me in the contest as already have the book. I’m definitely an Adrian Phoenix fan, loved the Maker’s Song series. I can’t wait for Etched in Bone to see what Dante and Heather are up to.
As always, thanks so much for your support, Andrea!
I hope you enjoy BDM!

Hi Jennifer,
Thanks for joining us!
Yes, I’ve had scenes that happened completely out of the blue, things I hadn’t originally planned, that became pivotal to the story. I won’t say what they are here since I don’t want to give plot points away to those who are just starting the books.
It usually happened by thinking: What is the one the thing that can’t happen? Then following with: Ah, but what if it did?
As for the scene I’m most proud of, again, don’t want to spoil anything for new readers.
Thanks so much for your questions!

Hi Adrian, Congrats on the release it sounds like a great start to a new series.
What is the best part of being a writer?
Do you plot your books or write as they come to you?
Favorite setting to curl up and read a good book?
Did you get the possible dog approved by the cats? I know my 2 would take serious offense if I did that.
Thanks!
