Zuphreen: Bestower of Damnation by Su Halfwerk
Drawn together as only misfits are, Diana, Sally and Art succumb to the lure of summoning a demon. Backed into a corner by Professor Humphreys, the three friends fall for the ruse of a special project to make up their grades.
“Professor Humphrey smiled and rubbed his stubbly chin with his fingers. ‘Oh, yes, of course. The ever-plummeting marks.’ Diana couldn’t help herself and added, ‘Yeah, they need a facelift.’ The thick silence that hovered in the room weighed down on her chest. Her smile felt goofy and heavy on her face.”
Summoning a demon seems easy, and with no thought to the consequences the deed is done. Can they survive the aftermath? Did they truly bind the demon correctly, or will their commands come back to hurt them?
Diana expects people to follow her. With all of her money she finds it easy to intimidate people, and enjoys having Sally tag along, eager to do her bidding. But will her arrogance be her downfall? Can she see the pitfalls and right the wrongs her attitude has caused?
This was actually a first for me in that I had never read Horror before. The characters were well thought-out, and I was able to follow their slow disintegration. While the descent into madness was horrifying, it was not bone-chilling in its intensity. I did not feel as if I was perched on the edge of my seat waiting to find out what happened next.
Overall, Zuphreen was a well-written and thought-out book that at times seemed a little too well-planned, but definitely has a horror factor. I must say I think Su has done well in that the writing style for this is vastly different from the romance I previously reviewed.
