Once Bitten by Trina M. Lee

***½

Alexa O’Brien is an alpha female werewolf who hunts creatures like vampires and werewolves that have gone rogue or pose a threat to society. As though that were not enough to keep her busy, she is also fighting a seriously strong attraction to a sexy and dangerous vampire, the lure of human blood, and ties to a former alpha pack member, all while trying to unravel the mystery surrounding the murder of her family by the wolf who turned her.

Lee does a great job of developing Alexa into a multidimensional character whom you may not always like or agree with her choices and actions but with whom you can sympathize and become invested in seeing how things work out for her. Alexa is stubborn, strong, tough, loving, and fiercely loyal but she also acts rashly without thinking about the consequences of her actions – not just for her but also for the people in her life as well.

Naturally gifted with the ability to conduct and manipulate energy, Alexa struggles to control and use her power and to be more than a predator that preys on the blood and flesh of humans. Her attempts to do so, however, are tested by her attraction to Arys, a vampire with whom she shares a powerful and strange attraction, chemistry, and metaphysical synergy.

Jumping right into the action of the story, Lee beautifully explores the dual-sided nature of Alexa’s existence as a werewolf and human hybrid with vivid description and effective use of first person narration. Early on in Once Bitten, Alexa makes a choice that drastically changes her life and leaves her torn between Arys, the ultra sexy and dangerous vampire who excites her and tempts her to give into her animalistic and violent nature, and Shaz, a friend and member of her wolf pack who keeps her grounded and at peace. While Lee effectively explores and develops Arys’s character, I didn’t really feel like I got to know Shaz much at all. I hope that as the series progresses Lee will explore and develop Shaz more.

With Once Bitten, Lee has begun a series with an intriguing, exciting world filled with all kinds of dangerous beings—shapeshifters, demons, witches, vampires, etc.—that I can’t wait to read more about. Once Bitten is an interesting urban fantasy read with great action scenes, an interesting mix of characters, and brief bits of romance. I’m giving it 3.5 tombstones of 5.
