Watchers, there were not enough hours in the day to keep up with my genre-show viewing this week. I did not get to Lost Girl, The Fades, or Alcatraz yet, but by next week will have seen them and will say something about them. Read more…

Howl by Silke Juppenlatz
We only think we know what lurks in the shadows surrounding us, taking comfort in the tangible. But do we, really? Lucia is no exception to this bit of human nature, either, and it is about to bite her back — hard. However, when the fantastical presents itself to her, she meets it head-on, whether she believes in it or not.

Night Walker by Lisa Kessler
Kate Bradley was watching the Dia de los Muertos service at Mission de Alcala when she suddenly felt ill and wandered outside to the mission cemetery. Realizing she wasn’t alone, Kate turned to find a handsome man standing nearby who introduced himself as Calisto Terana. Kate was surprised that Calisto seemed interested in her, but quickly broke away to find her two friends, leaving her to wonder if she had done the right thing by pulling away so abruptly.

Passionate Pleasures by Bertrice Small
The “devil” has created an erotica channel for women. It is part of the cable package and is only open from 8 p.m. to 4 a.m. But, women can program into their remote whatever fantasy they like. They then slip into the fantasy of their dreams.
The position of town librarian has always belonged to a female in the St. John line. Kathryn St. John is the most recent descendant to hold that position. She enjoys her job. Shifted Perceptions by Diana DeRicci
Gage and Rex are not gay, but the thought of sharing a woman turns them both on like nothing else. They share a deep friendship, and it’s been a while since one woman has stirred both of them—that is until Dali sneezes her way into Rex’s life through a mutual friend. One look at Dali and he knows Gage has to taste her. There’s something more: Rex and Gage are shifters, which makes relationships between them interesting, to say the least. Read more…

Flesh and Spirit by Carol Berg
“On my seventh birthday, my father swore, for the first of many times, that I would die face down in a cesspool. On that same occasion, my mother, will all the accompanying mystery and elevated language appropriate for a prominent diviner, turned her cards, screamed delicately, and proclaimed that my doom was written in water and blood and ice. As for me, from about that time and for the twenty years since, I had spat on my middle finger and slapped the rump of every aingerou I noticed, murmuring the sincerest, devoutest prayer that I might prove my parents’ predictions wrong. Not so much that I feared the doom itself–doom is just the hind end of living, after all–but to see the two who birthed me confounded.”

Breath and Bone by Carol Berg
Breath and Bone starts where Flesh and Spirit finished: Valen contracted in service to the most feared of the three princes who are waging war for the throne. In this book, he also finds out why he is so different from the rest of his family. There is more found out about Osriel, the man who holds Valen’s contract and who is oft accused of working dark magic, and Sila Diaglou, an apocalyptic priestess whose followers have a tendency to lay waste to the countryside in order to “cleanse” it. The Danae also make a greater appearance in this book than they did in Flesh and Spirit. Read more…

Week Long Author Event – Day 5 Diana Pharaoh Francis
Five Mistakes To Avoid When Falling Into a Fantasy World
It’s easy to accidentally find yourself in a magical world. Maybe you pass through some mist and arrive in a strange lost city. Maybe you go into a shop that was never there before. Maybe you open an old door in a house. Maybe you drink a potion or fall prey to an old curse. Or worse, maybe the magical world finds you. Maybe you were living in it all along, only now, you’ve woken up to find just how magical it is. Whatever the case, don’t make these mistakes:

Five Things a Kind Author Would Never Do To a Fantasy Hero
Epic adventures like those I write deal with world-changing events in big settings. Heroes must deal with gritty villains, warring kingdoms, terrible secrets, treachery, kidnapping, slavery, imprisonment, general angst, feelings of inadequacy, and always, always bad guys in hot pursuit. They are required to share their bodies with other souls, sleep on the ground, give up their fundamental beliefs, Read more…
